Sequel to A Note in the Margin

Christmas can be a time of love and joy, but to three men at the bookstore called Margins, it also brings reflection on what was and what will be, highlighting the importance of home and family during a hot Australian Christmas. Their lives are intertwined by the bookstore, but individually David has difficulty reconnecting with the son he knew, John discovers something about the father who abandoned him, and Jamie braces himself for what he thinks will be his first Christmas on his own.

Twelve Days A Note in the Margin and Twelve Days Book 2 edition by Isabelle Rowan Literature Fiction eBooks

Featuring characters and situations from "A Note in the Margin", so there may be slight spoilers. Be forewarned...

As Christmas approaches, John and David prepare for their first holiday together. John still owns Margins, the bookstore in which he first met David, and as the two, along with Jamie, his employee and the son of the previous owner, prepare for Christmas, they all have wishes for Christmas. Challenges. Wants and needs.

John wants David to be happy and content. Ever since the two have been together, and David moved in off the streets, it has been a challenge. Because David still has his good days and his bad days. Being homeless will do that to a man, and John is patient and loving with this delicate, fragile but tough man.

David is wary. He remembers how the holidays used to be. Back when he had a family, and he spent it with his son Adam. Took him to see the lights, the storefronts, and bought and made him presents. This year will be...different. Even though they are slowly building the bridge back to each other, there is a lot of history to overcome.

And Jamie wants a man of his own. Seeing the love between John and David makes his heart hungry. And there is a cute young man at the shelter. Could this be the one for him?

As Christmas Day approaches, David starts an advent calendar for the kids. For Jamie. For John. And for himself. But will the memories overwhelm him? Will John and his relationship be enough to9 guide him through this minefield? And will Jamie get his Christmas wish?

The beautifully crafted work of love reminds me why I love these characters so much. And how truly gifted a writer is Isabelle Rowan. Her gentle, understated treatment of these men is so sure, so pure. And the way she understands David - explains him to us, shows us the broken parts and the healing and the parts that still press inside him with jagged edges and sharp points. Just perfect.

I can't wait to see where she takes us next. The relationship between John and David is so beautiful, Jamie so fun and lonely, and Adam...I want to see Adam and David reunited and whole.

Wonderful.

Twelve Days A Note in the Margin and Twelve Days Book 2 edition by Isabelle Rowan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Again, I enjoyed David's and John's journey and their relationship. What I loved most about this one was it really did carry on. There was no miracle cure and everything was perfect. I really would like to read more. This couple and David's son still have so much I want to hear about.
This was a very nice short story that lets us see how David and John (and Jamie) are after we left them at the end of A Note in the Margin.

Just a couple of thoughts, echoing the ones I had about the previous book. The best thing of the story is that there is no magic healing. David is still in an uncomfortable way inside his head, but it's the patience and support of his lover and his friends that help him, and the real progress is that he lets himself be helped. John's determination in telling David that it's ok, even when something David does can still hurt him, is moving and the expression of true love. On the other hand, David's son is not as patient, but he is probably the only one who can really push his father and make him do something uncomfortable without running away. It's such a sweet story, and triple sweet around Christmas time. And let me tell you that I'm so happy for Jamie, who can resist him!
I enjoyed the first book, and this one is a good addition to that story. Lots of emotion and romance, and a good resolution for this part.
A Note in the Margin is perhaps my all time favorite romance. It was a true pleasure to visit with John, Jaime, and David again. I recommend that you read "Margin" first, otherwise I don't think you will understand what's going on here. But both books are well worth it.
A sweet addtion to the story. It's nice to see how everyone is handling Christmas, and to see that although there is progress. It's not smooth all smooth sailing, and the problems, and challenges they face have not magically gone away. I enjoy seeing a Christmas story that deals with how difficult the holidays can be for people. Honest, and refreshingly mature.
It is just wonderful to revisit these three characters from A Note in the Margin in this tender and sensitive Christmas novella. All three men have his own issue to overcome. David is still struggling to live a normal and healthy life after years being homeless. One year with John has certainly helped this sensitive man but the healing process is painfully slow as they soon find out as Christmas nears and David recalls his much happier past with his son. I love the little sad phases here where David is reminded of his once homeless situation. John has his own ghost who visits him in a biscuit tin of photographs. I hope the writer will give us a sequel to deal with this! As for Jamie, this young man finds himself missing his mother, unsure about the future yet excited about a certain young man named Brian. I love the interaction among these three guys. All this is told in heartfelt writing as the guys count the twelve days before Christmas. I love A Note in the Margin and this Christmas novella is a worthy revisit of these guys' lifes. Now if only the writer will give us another full blown novel on these three guys.
This very short novella was really unnecessary and should have been free for those who wanted more John and David. If it had been free I wouldn't feel totally ripped off. I liked the first book, especially David, and the entire point of interest for me was him and the severe anxiety disorder or mental illness that he is trying to cope with. I was hoping to get more details of his earlier life and what kind of breakdown he had for him to become homeless. I was hoping to see his love of John and desire not to cause him pain triumph over his illness. But this continuation of the story is just a very underdeveloped, one dimensional look at the twelve days before their first Christmas. A little bit of John, a little bit of David and son Adam and a little bit of Jamie (who is a weak secondary character) with his crush Brian. Better just to leave it at the first book.
